FIJI-NAURU ADVANCE RELATIONS

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka met with the President of the Republic of Nauru, His Excellency David Adeang.

During his first official visit to Nauru this week, Minister Ditoka attended the Nauru's 58th anniversary of Independence at the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Nauru, symbolising the enduring friendship, shared values, and cultural bonds between our two nations.

The visit marked Minister Ditoka's first regional engagement since the assumption of his new ministerial portfolio.

During the meeting held yesterday at the Office of the President in Nauru, Hon. Ditoka conveyed the warm greetings of the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, together with the heartfelt best wishes of the people of Fiji.

Both sides welcomed the constructive and forward-looking discussions aimed at advancing the key areas of bilateral development cooperation, including:

• education facilitation and people-to-people linkages
• consideration of expanded Air Services Agreements
• opportunities for fresh food supplies from Fiji
• and the facilitation of extradition and legal cooperation

Fiji and Nauru share longstanding ties as Pacific neighbours and the meeting yesterday reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening cooperation in practical ways that deliver real benefits to our peoples.
