Delaware Primary Results

Results from Delaware's September 15 primary set the stage for several key federal, statewide and legislative races.

Sen. Chris Coons (D), who has represented Delaware in the Senate since 2011, defeated three challengers in the Democratic primary. He will face former state senator Mike Katz who won the Republican nomination.

In the race for Delaware's sole U.S. House seat, incumbent Rep. Sarah McBride did not face a Democratic primary challenger. Republican Joseph "Dr. Joe" Arminio won a three-way GOP primary and will face McBride in November.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings also advanced after winning a three-way Democratic primary as she seeks a third term. Jennings will face Republican Dave Graham who was the only declared candidate from his party.

In the General Assembly, there was notable turnover with five incumbent Democratic state lawmakers defeated.

In the State Senate, District 5 incumbent Democrat Sen. Ray Seigfried lost to Shay Frisby

Four incumbent House members also lost their Democratic primaries:

• District 2: Rep. Stephanie Bolden lost to Michelle Booker
• District 3: Rep. Josue Ortega lost to Branden Fletcher-Dominguez
• District 16: Rep. Franklin "Frank" Cooke lost to Pamela Salaam
• District 28: Rep. Bill "Lumpy" Carson lost to Tyeisha "Tye" Grier

Of interest to credit unions, Sen. Spiros Mantzavinos, who chairs the Senate Banking Committee, won his Democratic primary. The committee considers legislation affecting financial institutions. The Association has worked closely with Sen. Mantzavinos on several bills.

It is also worth noting that Delaware does not hold a primary contest when only one candidate from a party files for an office. As a result, unopposed candidates do not appear in that primary contest and instead advance to the general election as their party's nominee.

Early voting begins in Delaware October 22 with general election scheduled for November 3.
