NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital has received Magnet recognition, the highest national honor for nursing excellence, as a reflection of its nursing professionalism, teamwork and superiority in patient care. With this news, NewYork-Presbyterian has now achieved Magnet recognition at all of its 11 hospitals and is currently the only healthcare system in New York state with the designation at all its hospitals.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. Only 10% of hospitals in the U.S. have achieved Magnet recognition, and NewYork-Presbyterian's hospitals account for 11 out of New York state's 51 Magnet hospitals.
"Achieving Magnet recognition is a testament to our culture of excellence and our nurses' commitment to providing the highest quality care to our patients, their families, and the communities we serve," said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. "We are deeply proud of our nursing teams at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and throughout our healthcare system for this outstanding achievement."
"This tremendous milestone represents our collaborative pursuit of excellence, not only in nursing practice, but in every aspect of patient care," said Wilhelmina Manzano, MA, RN, group senior vice president and chief nursing executive at NewYork-Presbyterian. "Our collective journey to Magnet was made possible through the dedication and unwavering focus on patient care that each of our nurses and care team members bring to work each day."
The Magnet Recognition Program, considered the gold standard, identifies healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and professionalism in nursing practice, and provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care.
"We are so excited to celebrate our Magnet designation and have our amazing nurses be recognized for their incredible care for our patients and community," said Alan Levin, chief nursing officer at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital.
The Magnet Model provides a framework for nursing practice, research, and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC evaluates applicants across a number of components and dimensions to gauge an organization's nursing excellence. The foundation of this model comprises various elements deemed essential to delivering superior patient care. These include the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.
Magnet-recognized hospitals provide benefits to their patients, communities and organizations such as higher patient satisfaction related to nursing communication, lower risk of 30-day mortality, and higher job satisfaction among nursing staff, according to the ANCC.
