Free speaker series for seniors focused on health, safety, and well-being

Ventura, Calif. - The City of Ventura invites residents aged 50 and older to participate in a free monthly Ventura Council for Seniors (VCS)Speaker Series, running from June through November 2025. Each session is designed to empower seniors and caregivers with valuable information on health, safety, and well-being.

"This series is all about supporting our older adult community with tools to live independently, safely, and confidently," said Janine Cobian, Recreation Supervisor. "Whether you're navigating Medicare, making your home safer, or just looking to stay informed, there's something for everyone."

Meetings are held in-person on the 3rd Tuesday of each month from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Ventura Avenue Adult Center, 550 N. Ventura Ave.

June 17 - Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy

  • Learn how to navigate Medicare and other health insurance options, understand your rights, and access free, unbiased counseling to help make informed decisions.

July 15 - Blueprints for Safe & Sustainable Aging in Place

  • Explore practical solutions and strategies for making home modifications that prioritize safety, comfort, and independence.

August 19 - Blood Sugar & Diabetes

  • Learn about managing Type 2 Diabetes with a focus on nutrition, medications, exercise, and blood sugar monitoring.

September 16 - Nutrition as We Age

  • Discover how nutritional needs change with age and get practical tips for maintaining a healthy diet.

October 21 - Medicare Basics

  • Get an overview of Medicare, including eligibility, enrollment periods, coverage options, and tips to avoid common pitfalls.

November 18 - Elder Safety

  • Learn how to protect yourself or your loved ones from scams, abuse, and common safety risks at home and in the community.
