City Of Taunton And Taunton Public Schools Hold 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Taunton, MA - The City of Taunton and Taunton Public Schools joined together at Martin Middle School for a solemn 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony honoring the lives lost and the heroes who responded on September 11, 2001. Mayor Shaunna O'Connell, Superintendent John Cabral, local elected leaders, and city officials joined the school community to reflect on the lasting significance of this day.

O'Connell expressed her gratitude to Principal Jaimie Pereira for opening Martin Middle School to host this important event. "September 11th is a pivotal moment in our nation's history, and it is our responsibility to ensure that students understand its significance. By bringing remembrance ceremonies like this into our schools, we ensure that future generations learn about the events of 9/11, the heroes we lost, and the importance of unity, service, and resilience," she said.

Students played a central role in the program, leading the Pledge of Allegiance, singing the National Anthem, presenting heartfelt readings, and delivering outstanding performances with the 7th Grade Band and Chorus under the leadership of Corey Beltram, Taunton Public Schools Performing Arts Coordinator. Teacher Jennifer Russell performed a moving rendition of Taps.

Members of the Taunton Fire and Police Honor Guards, as well as the Taunton High School JROTC, contributed meaningfully to the ceremony. Deputy Fire Chief Robert Bastis and Taunton Police Sergeant Mathieu Clifford read the Firefighters' and Police Officers' prayers and served as a powerful reminder of the first responder heroes lost on 9/11.

Veterans in attendance were honored and thanked for their service by Mayor O'Connell. Introduced by Veterans Director Ally Rodriguez, U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Chris McMahon shared a powerful and moving speech with the community emphasizing to students and attendees that everyone can make a difference in their communities.

The City was especially humbled by the presence of the family of Peter Gay, the only Taunton resident who lost his life in the 9/11 attacks. His memory continues to live on in the Taunton community.

The ceremony also included a special recognition of Martin Middle School teacher T.J. Mills, who was presented with the "Making a Difference" Community Service Award in honor of his outstanding dedication to the City of Taunton and the Middle School community.

Superintendent Cabral added: "September 11 is a day our students must learn about, even though they were not yet born when it happened. Today's ceremony gave them the chance to reflect on the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the importance of unity in the face of tragedy. It was especially meaningful for our students to honor Peter Gay and his family, reminding us all that his legacy-and the lessons of compassion and service-live on here in Taunton."

The City of Taunton proudly reaffirms its pledge to "never forget."###
