On 7-12 April 2026, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Washington D.C. to meet the President of the United States, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of War. He participated in a discussion hosted by the Ronald Reagan Institute. The Secretary General also attended the Bilderberg Meeting.
On 8 April, the Secretary General met with the President of the United States, Mr. Donald J. Trump as well as with the Secretary of State, Mr. Marco Rubio, and the Secretary of War, Mr. Pete Hegseth. In his conversations the Secretary General had frank discussion on a range of issues related to transatlantic security, including in the context of Iran. Mr Rutte underscored the importance of Allies continuing to step up to deliver a stronger and fairer NATO.
On 9 April, Mr Rutte gave a speech and took part in a discussion hosted by the Ronald Reagan Institute. In his speech he highlighted the importance of US leadership in NATO over time and noted how NATO is changing as Allies increase investment in defence. "Thanks to American leadership, and the collective commitment to ensuring continued freedom and security, NATO is growing stronger", Mr Rutte said. "Thanks to the mindset shift that is happening, I see a true partnership on the transatlantic horizon."
From 10 to 12 April, the Secretary General attended the Bilderberg Meeting.
