City Of Las Vegas 9/11 Remembrance Tributes
Set For Sept. 11 & Sept. 12
This Is The 25th Annual 9/11 Memorial Observance Held By The City Of Las Vegas
The public is invited to a remembrance event Friday morning, Sept. 11, in tribute to all those who lost their lives Sept. 11, 2001, in the World Trade Center tragedy. A longtime tradition in the fire service known as the "Tolling of the Bells" will be a part of the remembrance that begins at 6:45 a.m. (the approximate time of the South Tower collapse at the World Trade Center) at Fire Station 5, located at 1020 Hinson St. A bell will toll in front of the station. The tribute will be transmitted over the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue's communications channel and on the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Facebook page in remembrance of all those who lost their lives that day.
Many years before radio communications existed in the fire service, communication was done via fire alarm boxes on street corners, each assigned a "box number" much like an address. Firefighters had to memorize the box numbers and their locations. When a person pulled a fire alarm, the signal would go to all the fire stations by wire and ring the bell in the stations. The bell would ring the number issued to that box, and firefighters would respond. Fire dispatch also had designated bell rings to alert department members of certain events.
If a firefighter was killed in the line of duty, fire dispatch would ring the bell in sets of five, three times. This would let everyone in the department know that a firefighter had been killed in the line of duty.
In addition, to the ringing of the bells, a special United States flag that once flew over the World Trade Center will be hoisted to half-staff on the flagpole in front of Fire Station Five. On display in front of the station is a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. The city of New York has requested that the special flag be flown over the piece of steel at half-staff Sept. 11 each year. It has been done every year since the city received the flag in 2004. Visitors also can see the Callery pear tree at Fire Station 5, one of two seedling gifts from New York from the only surviving tree at the World Trade Center after the buildings collapsed. The original tree still lives at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum site in New York. The second tree was planted at Police Memorial Park and is thriving there. The Las Vegas Ten-13 Club To Host Sept. 11 Remembrance At Police Memorial Park
Event Will Take Place 10 A.M.-12:30 P.M. Friday, Sept. 11
The city of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Ten-13 Club will host a public memorial event at Police Memorial Park Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. The park is located at 3250 Metro Academy Way and includes a tree grove and memorials to pay tribute to fallen law enforcement officers in our community. Join your neighbors in the park to together remember and honor the lives lost Sept. 11, 2001, and recognize the courage, service and resilience that followed. We invite our community to pause, reflect and remember on this solemn 25th anniversary.

9/11 Remembrance And Service Day At Floyd Lamb Park At Tule Springs
Saturday, Sept. 12, 8-11 A.M.
The public is invited to join in honoring the lives lost Sept. 11, 2001, in the World Trade Center tragedy, as well as the brave first responders, Saturday, Sept. 12, from 8 to 11 a.m. at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs. There will be a public ceremony with speakers from the police and fire departments, live performances by local youth and the planting of 500 U.S. flags. Several community groups are coming together to sponsor the event, including the city of Las Vegas, Las Vegas Area Council of Scouting America, Just Serve, Youth Service America, AmeriCorps, Get Outdoors Nevada and the Jeremiah Program in Las Vegas. Pinkbox Doughnuts will provide free doughnuts and a coffee truck will offer beverages for sale. Following the memorial, attendees are invited to participate in a park cleanup and assembling of care kits for those in need. Register for the event here.
