Vehicle stopped by police leads to the seizure of a sawed-off rifle. One male in custody: C26-81326

On April 9, 2026, just before 1:30 p.m., East and North District General Patrol officers entered into an weapons investigation that occurred in the Maples neighbourhood.

Upon arrival, officers determined that a 16-year-old and 17-year-old youth males were walking on the sidewalk near Jefferson Avenue and Maevista Place earlier on in the day when a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox pulled up close to them. The front passenger rolled down their window and pointed a sawed-off rifle at the two youth males before fleeing the area. The two male youths were not injured.

Just after 2:00 p.m., the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox was located in the 400 block of Adsum Drive and was stopped in the 1400 block of Jefferson Avenue. One male was arrested. Officers searched the vehicle and seized the following items:

  • Sawed-off Remington rifle (with serial number obliterated)
  • .177 calibre air pistol revolver
  • Flint lock cap gun
  • Machete

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation.

Frederick Basbas CRUZ, (18), has been charged with the following:

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in Motor Vehicle
  • Pointing a Firearm x 2
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has been Tampered With
  • Possession of a Weapon x 3

He was detained in custody.
