Purdue University Fort Wayne's undergraduate engineering programs are tied for No. 44 nationally among institutions that do not offer a doctorate in engineering, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2027 Best Colleges rankings. Among the public universities in that list, the programs rank 11th nationally and first in the Midwest.
The recognition brings national attention to engineering education in northeast Indiana, where Purdue Fort Wayne combines classroom instruction with applied design projects and opportunities for students to gain professional experience with regional employers.
The university offers undergraduate programs in civil, computer, electrical, and mechanical engineering, as well as five engineering technology majors and 3 computing majors through its College of Engineering, Technology, and Computer Science, led by Sherif Elfayoumy, the College's Steel Dynamics Dean.
"This recognition reflects the dedication of our faculty and staff and the work our students do every day," Elfayoumy said. "Our focus is on preparing students to become capable engineers who can put their knowledge to work. Through engineering design projects and connections with employers, students can build practical skills while contributing to the region's future. We guarantee every student an experiential learning opportunity."
Purdue Fort Wayne's engineering programs connect students with opportunities to apply their education before graduation. Internships with local employers allow students to gain experience while completing their degrees, and senior design projects challenge them to work in teams to solve technical problems.
In mechanical engineering, for example, students complete a two-semester senior design sequence that brings together knowledge gained throughout their studies. Teams develop designs that account for considerations such as cost, safety, and reliability, with guidance from faculty.
These experiences support Purdue Fort Wayne's role in preparing engineering talent for northeast Indiana's manufacturing and technology sectors. For prospective students and families, the ranking provides national recognition of engineering programs available close to home.
