Taiwan and US conclude first round of tariff talks

Taiwan has concluded its first round of in-person tariff talks with the U.S. in Washington, D.C., on May 1, 2025 (Eastern Daylight Time). The two sides held extensive discussions and exchanged views on a range of issues, including tariffs, non-tariff trade barriers and other aspects of Taiwan-U.S. economic and trade cooperation. They expressed hope for creating more opportunities for industrial and economic development on the basis of mutual benefit and reciprocity, and agreed to continue discussions in the near future, with a view to building consensus and exploring avenues for deepening cooperation.

Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun, who led Taiwan's delegation, stated that the Taiwanese and U.S. economies are highly complementary, and that close cooperation between the two sides will enhance their respective industrial systems and strengthen their global competitiveness. She expressed confidence that the ongoing talks, grounded in openness and mutual understanding, will help forge the broadest possible consensus.
