The iconic IRONMAN Western Australia Asia-Pacific Championship returns to Busselton on Sunday 7 December, welcoming more than 3,500 athletes from around the globe to compete across the IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 events.
Adding to the prestige this year, the Asia-Pacific Championship has been awarded to the IRONMAN event for the first time, meaning athletes will also be competing for regional titles alongside professional and age-group titles.
For over 20 years, the event has thrived thanks to the unwavering support of the local community. From cheering on athletes along the scenic course to volunteering behind the scenes, South West residents and regional partners have played a vital role in making the IRONMAN Western Australia Asia-Pacific Championship one of the most celebrated triathlon events in the world.
IRONMAN Western Australia Asia-Pacific Championship Regional Director Carl Smith expressed gratitude for the ongoing support that has sustained the event for more than two decades.
"IRONMAN Western Australia Asia-Pacific Championship simply wouldn't be possible without the incredible backing of the Busselton community. From volunteers and local businesses to residents who embrace the event each year, their contribution is what makes this race so special. We're proud to celebrate 20-plus years of partnership and look forward to another unforgettable event," said Smith.
Since 2012, Rio Tinto has partnered with the IRONMAN Western Australia volunteer program, helping to mobilise thousands of passionate locals who ensure the race runs smoothly. Over the past decade, more than 10,000 volunteers have contributed their time and energy, with Rio Tinto providing honorariums to community groups that assist with event operations.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore General Manager Communities Molly Singline said: "What makes Busselton truly special is its volunteer spirit.
"IRONMAN is a huge boost for Busselton and the South West, it brings thousands of visitors to WA and gives local people the chance to be part of a global event right in their own backyard.
"It's not just about the race; it's about the energy it brings to local businesses and the community. Our volunteers love getting involved and helping make it all happen, and Rio Tinto is thrilled to stand behind that spirit."
Beyond the finish line, the event delivers significant benefits to the region, injecting more than $15.5 million into the local economy through accommodation, hospitality, and tourism. This influx supports businesses across Busselton and the South West, reinforcing the event's role as a major economic driver for Western Australia.
Adding to the vibrant race week atmosphere, local restaurants are once again embracing the IRONMAN Local Restaurant Program, decorating their venues to welcome athletes and visitors into town. This initiative not only showcases Busselton's hospitality but also creates a festive environment that celebrates the global nature of the event while supporting local businesses.
To ensure athlete and community safety and smooth race operations during the event, temporary road closures and detours will be in place throughout Busselton and surrounding areas. Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Full details on traffic impacts can be found at https://www.ironman.com/races/im-western-australia/traffic-impact.
