The Linn County Board of Supervisors appointed nine members to the newly formed Linn County Solid Waste Working Group on Friday. The working group formed out of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Linn County, Marion, Cedar Rapids, and the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency agreeing to work together to address the future of the landfill located at 1954 County Home Road.
The landfill, owned and operated by the Cedar Rapids Linn County Solid Waste Agency, is filling more quickly than previously projected and could reach capacity as early as 2036. The facility currently manages an average of 600 tons of waste per day. An early closure would significantly increase waste disposal costs for residents and businesses throughout Linn County and could disrupt essential waste management services.
The new working group is tasked with developing recommendations for a new governance structure for the Linn County Solid Waste Agency. To develop its recommendations, the working group will consider critical task areas that include reviewing waste diversion metrics and performance targets, and ongoing strategic planning to identify near-term and long-term actions and goals.
The working group must finalize its recommendations by Feb. 27, 2026, and then present the recommendations to each jurisdiction. Due to this 13-day window, the working group will have three intensive working sessions (meetings) open to the public. These meetings will be livestreamed on Linn County's website, LinnCountyIowa.gov. Recordings of the meeting will also be available on Linn County's website.
The meeting schedule is as follows:
