Disability Pride Month Highlights Cary's Accessible Parks, Programs, and Community Events

Cary, NC- This Disability Pride Month, Cary is recognizing the contributions of people with disabilities while highlighting the parks, programs, and community events that help make Cary welcoming and accessible for everyone.

Accessibility is part of everyday life in Cary. Through ACCESS Cary, accessible and inclusive recreation is provided year-round through individualized accommodations, trained staff, modified equipment, adaptive resources, and thoughtful program design. These efforts help individuals with disabilities participate more fully, build independence, develop friendships, and stay connected to their community.

"Everyone deserves the opportunity to connect, play, create, and be part of their community," said Operations & Program Supervisor - Access, Sarah Gamsey. "Disability Pride Month is an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities while recognizing the importance of creating spaces and experiences where everyone feels welcome."

This commitment is highlighted annually through Share & Care, which brings together individuals with disabilities, families, caregivers, service providers, community organizations, and other supporters in one welcoming space. The event offers opportunities to learn about local programs, services, and resources while building relationships among families, professionals, and community partners. By encouraging connection, collaboration, and greater awareness, Share & Care helps strengthen Cary's network of support and promote a more inclusive community. Cary's commitment to inclusion and accessibility can also be seen throughout its parks system. Families can visit the Kids Together Playground at Marla Dorrel Park, where children of all abilities can play, explore, and connect.

Accessibility is also a focus at many of Cary's signature events. At this year's Cary 50th Lazy Daze Arts & Crafts Festival on August 22 and 23, visitors can take advantage of accessible parking and shuttle service, wheelchair loans, accessible restrooms, sensory-friendly spaces, large-print materials, and American Sign Language interpretation by request.

The festival will also feature ACCESS the Arts, an indoor artist market showcasing the work of North Carolina artists with disabilities. Festivalgoers are invited to meet the artists, learn about their work, and support their creativity by purchasing original artwork.

Disability Pride Month is a reminder that creating an inclusive community is an ongoing effort. Through accessible parks, inclusive recreation programs, and community events like Share & Care and Lazy Daze, Cary continues to create opportunities for people of all abilities to connect, participate, and enjoy everything the community has to offer.
