Smart Traffic Signal Upgrades This Week at Key Duke Street Intersections

The City of Alexandria's Adaptive Signal Control Cabinet Upgrade project is moving forward, with important work happening this week at two of the city's busiest intersections along Duke Street.

This work is part of the City's Smart Mobility Program - crews will install new traffic signal cabinets that allow real-time, adaptive signal timing. Once fully deployed, these improvements will help reduce congestion, improve travel time reliability, and keep traffic moving more efficiently over time.

What to Expect This Week

Drivers should plan ahead for delays and brief signal flashes at:

  • Duke Street & N. Quaker Lane - April 21
  • Duke Street & S. Quaker Lane - April 23

While our crews work to improve these intersections, residents and commuters should plan extra travel time or use alternate routes if possible.

We appreciate the community's patience as we work to improve traffic with new technology.

Stay Safe in Work Zones

Slow down and use caution when traveling through work zones. Signs and flaggers will direct you through work zones. Follow their directions, be patient, and drive carefully to keep everyone safe.

Drivers can identify work zones, traffic, incidents, and more in advance of their trips by using VDOT's 511 Virginia tool. Visit 511.vdot.virginia.gov, download the free mobile 511 Virginia app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.

What is Adaptive Signal Control?

Unlike traditional fixed-timing signals, the new adaptive signal control system uses advanced detection and management technology to adjust signal timing in real time based on current traffic conditions. These upgrades will modernize signal infrastructure along Duke Street and S. Van Dorn Street, improve overall traffic flow, and serve as an important step towards a more responsive transportation system in Alexandria.

Where we're working next

Additional Duke Street intersections will be upgraded in the coming months, including the intersections of Duke Street with:

  • Alexandria Commons Entrance
  • Sweeley Street
  • Roth Street
  • Witter Street
  • W. Taylor Run Parkway
  • S. Dove Street
  • Callahan Drive
  • Diagonal Road
  • John Carlyle Street
  • S. Peyton Street
  • West Street
