University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center Names New Vice President of Human Resources to Lead Staffing and Workforce Development Initiatives

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (September 28, 2026) - The University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC), a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), has appointed David Lazzari, MSH, as its new Vice President of Human Resources.

In this leadership role, Lazzari will oversee key areas across both the hospital and ambulatory care settings, including talent acquisition, strategic workforce development, professional advancement, employee relations and team member well-being.

Lazzari holds more than 18 years of progressive human resources experience in complex healthcare organizations. Most recently, he served as Assistant Vice President of Human Resources for MedStar Health, where he provided executive human resources leadership for MedStar Washington Hospital Center and the MedStar National Rehabilitation Network. Earlier in his career, Lazzari was a member of the UMMS business partner team where he managed all aspects of human resources including human resources' policy development and working closely with clinical service line leaders to recruit and sustain high-functioning teams.

At UM BWMC, Lazzari will work closely with senior leaders to align strategic objectives as well as lead a local team of human resources experts to drive recruitment, development, retention and workforce planning initiatives across the hospital and the organization's ambulatory practices in Anne Arundel County. He will also partner with human resources and executive leaders across UMMS to align workforce resources and objectives.

Lazzari brings expertise in strategic human capital solutions for large, integrated hospital and rehabilitation networks to his executive role at UM BWMC. A veteran of the healthcare industry, he integrates a deep understanding of policy and law into his advocacy for care providers. With nearly two decades of human resources leadership experience, Lazzari intends to foster a culture that upholds UMMS's core values of excellence, compassion, diversity, integrity and discovery and innovation.

Lazzari earned his Master of Science in Human Resources Management from the University of Maryland Global Campus and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine from Elon University. He is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, the world's largest human resources professional association for the research and implementation of workplace innovation.
