Have Your Say on Safer Streets

By Trace Espinosa, City of Montgomery Communications Intern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - July 2, 2025

The Montgomery Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is holding an online survey for interested residents who want to help improve pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure across the region. The survey is part of the MPO's Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Update Project and will remain open through July 30, 2025.

This updated plan will assess where improvements are needed the most within the MPO planning area, which includes portions of Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga counties. Public input is strongly encouraged during this process to ensure that regional priorities reflect the needs and concerns of those who live here.

Underserved communities, such as low-income areas, elderly populations, and neighborhoods with limited mobility options, have often been left out of transportation improvements. The MPO is working to address this by providing access to online tools, including this survey, where residents can give direct feedback on issues like missing sidewalks, unsafe crossings, and lack of bike lanes.

"The public's input is an important part of the transportation planning process. It helps inform transportation planners, engineers and decision-makers about where both bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements are needed. Let your voice be heard about where you want to see new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and where it's needed," said Robert Smith, planning director of the Montgomery MPO.

The current update builds on the Walk Bike River Region plan last revised in 2018. Data from this survey will help identify problems in specific areas, shape future project lists, and strengthen the region's case for state and federal funding.

To participate in the survey, visit the Montgomery MPO website at www.montgomerympo.org and click on the "Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan Public Survey." The deadline to submit feedback is July 30, 2025.
