Kayla Weslager: From Histology to Creativity, Finding Her Path in Marketing and Media

Shields School of Business - Communcations Program | 04/16/2026

When Kayla began her college journey in 2022, she set her sights on a career in the medical field. Enrolled at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, she pursued an associate degree in Histology-the study of tissues and cells. But it didn't take long for her to realize that path wasn't the right fit.

"I knew it wasn't for me," Kayla said. "I've always had a passion for creativity, and when I was introduced to Marketing and Communications, I immediately felt at home."

After changing her major to Business Management, Kayla transferred to Saint Francis University in 2024, where she refined her direction once again-this time landing on Marketing with a minor in Communications. It was a decision that aligned not only with her skills but with who she is.

Looking back, Kayla shared that her original path had shifted more than once. "When I graduated high school, I originally planned to major in Accounting," she said. "But I changed my mind to Histology after someone close to my family described it as an interesting and well- paying field."

Finding Her Place

Kayla's transition into Communications opened the door to new opportunities-and a stronger sense of belonging.

In August 2025, she was introduced to the Communications Club by her friend Samantha Przybys, a member of the women's golf team. Encouraged to get involved, Kayla joined and quickly embraced the club's hands-on experience, producing engaging video content for its Instagram platform.

Her involvement didn't stop there. Kayla also interned with the University's Marketing and Communications Department, where she gained experience filming and editing video content and writing blog posts for the University's website. She further expanded her skill set through the University's Athletics Broadcasting Department, working in live sports production.

"In my role covering games, I am part of the camera crew, where I focus on capturing live action and ensuring quality visual coverage throughout each event," Kayla said. "This involves following the pace of the game closely, anticipating key moments, and maintaining proper framing and shot composition."

Through these experiences, she has developed a strong attention to detail and the ability to adapt in fast-paced, live-production environments.

Developing a Creative Eye

In recent months, Kayla has discovered a growing passion for photography-one that is already shaping her future goals.

After receiving her first Canon camera as a Christmas gift, she began exploring new techniques and subjects, building her skills both independently and through a campus photography course. What started as curiosity has quickly evolved into something more meaningful.

"Having an interest in photography has really changed my perspective," Kayla said. "I'm not just snapping a photo-I'm seeing the art behind it."

As she continues to grow creatively, Kayla hopes to turn her passion for photography into a side business, combining her marketing knowledge with her artistic vision.

The Power of Finding Your Path

At Saint Francis University, Kayla has embraced change, explored new opportunities, and discovered where her passions truly lie. By stepping outside her comfort zone and pursuing what inspires her, she has transformed uncertainty into purpose.

Her journey reflects the power of finding the right fit-and the confidence that comes with it.

The Power of "And"

At Saint Francis University, we encourage our students to embrace the power of "and." Every new skill, talent, and challenge they explore here under guidance builds a foundation for something greater. It's through blending passions, disciplines, and experiences that they become someone they are uniquely called to be.
