A portion of Normal Road will be temporarily closed for a project to improve pedestrian safety around the new Mitchell Elementary School.
Beginning Monday, April 21, Normal Road will be closed to traffic between Edgebrook Drive and Ridge Drive. A median will be constructed in this block of Normal Road. The median, along with the creation of crosswalks, will make it safer for students walking to and from the school.
Additionally, Normal Road between West Hillcrest Drive and Ridge Drive will be open to local traffic only. This will reduce traffic in the construction area while maintaining access for residents.
Traffic will be detoured at Ridge Drive and West Hillcrest Drive and directed to Blackhawk Road. DeKalb Public Transit will also be putting temporary bus service detours in place for the project. Information on these detours will be available on the transit website at cityofdekalb.com/1397/Rider-Alerts-Service-Schedules.
The project is expected to be completed in two to three weeks. The schedule will allow this portion of Normal Road to reopen to traffic ahead of the start of the roundabout project at Normal Road and Lucinda Avenue.
The City thanks the community for its patience as this safety project is completed.
