City Seeks Community Representatives for New Community Policing Board

The City of Olympia is seeking community members with diverse, lived experiences and perspectives to serve on a newly established Community Policing Board. You're invited to apply to fill one of the three positions on the new board through 5 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025. The Community Board's purpose is to increase opportunities for community involvement in law enforcement. As a board member, you would work closely with a newly appointed Civilian Police Auditor to provide community perspectives on their reports and recommendations. You would collaborate with the Auditor on engagement and education initiatives to better understand community priorities and values around policing, and for community members to better understand the City's oversight system. In the event of an officer-involved critical incident (i.e. use of deadly force) board members may be called to serve as community representatives on the regional Capitol Metro Independent Investigations Team (CMIIT) and/or the Olympia Police Department's Internal Use of Force Review Board. Successful applicants are required to complete a background check that meets Criminal Justice Information Service (CJIS) requirements. Membership terms generally run for three years. Applications and details on the application process are available online through the City website https://form.jotform.com/251205308519149 Background The Community Policing Board replaces and broadens the responsibilities undertaken by community representatives who previously served on a Police Use of Force Events Board. Community Policing Board members would help carry forward a series of 2024 Social Justice and Equity Commission recommendations designed to enhance Olympia's current community involvement and police oversight systems. The Community Policing Board also furthers Olympia's efforts to implement strategies and actions identified in a 2023 Reimagining Public Safety process. The Community Policing Board's role as part of Olympia's recommended Community Involvement and Police Oversight System:
