APCIA Encourages Support for the DRIVER Act

WASHINGTON - The American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) released the following statement in support of the Data Rights for Information and Vehicle Electronics in Real-Time (DRIVER) Act, which affirms that vehicle owners should have clear rights to access and control the data generated by their vehicles. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-TN).

"Consumers deserve access to and control over their vehicle data," said Sam Whitfield APCIA's senior vice president, federal government relations and political engagement. "The DRIVER Act is a critical step toward ensuring that drivers - not automakers - own the information their vehicles produce. This legislation strengthens privacy protections, promotes fair competition, and helps safeguard sensitive data from misuse or foreign access.

"APCIA strongly supports efforts to modernize data ownership standards and protect consumer rights. We urge Congress to advance this legislation swiftly to ensure that vehicle data remains secure, accessible, and under the control of those who own the vehicles."
