Cape Coral Residents Urged to Conserve Water Amid Ongoing Water Shortage

Cape Coral is experiencing critically low water levels in the Mid-Hawthorn Aquifer, which serves as a primary water source for northern parts of the city.

The South Florida Water Management District declared a water shortage in November 2023, and the mandatory one-day-a-week watering restriction remains in effect for affected areas (pictured to the right). Many residents in this area rely on private wells, and both irrigation and drinking water come from the same aquifer.

The City urges residents to comply with the restrictions to conserve water and protect this vital resource. The rest of Cape Coral follows the regular year-round watering schedule. Visit capecoral.gov/waterconservation for more details, including a map of impacted areas and the regular watering schedule.

Residents can help conserve water by:

  • Watering lawns early in the morning to reduce evaporation
  • Using drought-tolerant plants
  • Repairing leaks in irrigation systems, faucets, and toilets

Relief is on the way:

  • The North 1 Utilities Expansion Project will address about 5% of the impacted area by 2027
  • The North 6 UEP will complete the remaining 25% by 2030

Together, we can help preserve our natural groundwater resources.
