From Newcomer to Citizen: My commitment to serving Philadelphia’s immigrant community

Zuhail Corro-Vazquez, Welcoming Network Project Manager at the Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs, shares her story of recently becoming a U.S. Citizen. What this journey has meant to her and how it informs her work as a public servant.

Many immigrants arriving to the U.S. are faced with the challenges of navigating a new culture, learning a foreign system, and figuring out what steps they should take to fully begin to belong here. I am familiar with these challenges because I experienced them myself. When I first arrived in the United States, becoming a U.S. citizen felt like a distant dream.

The naturalization process is a long journey, one that requires patience, determination, and a deep commitment to understanding not only the laws but also the responsibilities that come with being a citizen.

When I finally took the oath of allegiance, it was more than a formality. It was a moment of pride, accomplishment, and gratitude. I was no longer just living in the United States; I became part of it as a citizen.

For the past year, I have had the honor of serving as Project Manager of the Welcoming Network Program at the Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs-where I work directly with immigrant communities across the city. My own experience arriving in the U.S. as an immigrant and now as a U.S. citizen gives me a unique perspective. I know firsthand the uncertainty and questions people have when they begin this process. I understand the mix of excitement and worry, the language barriers, and the importance of having accurate and trusted information.

In my role, I work with community partners, city departments, and local leaders to connect individuals to resources, such as legal, language, and healthservices, among others, that help them in every step of their immigration journey.

Every conversation with a community member reminds me of my own path. I see myself in their determination and their hope. That is why I take this work to heart-because I know that with the right support, every immigrant can reach their goals and fully participate in the civic life of our city.

Philadelphia is a city built and enriched by immigrants from all over the world. My story is just one among thousands, but it is a testament to what is possible when we invest in people, believe in their potential, and work together to create a truly welcoming city. For anyone out there dreaming of becoming a U.S. citizen: know that the road may be long, but you are not alone. You have a team of dedicated individuals at the Office of Immigrant Affairs working to facilitate your path to Citizenship. I walked it myself with my family and loved ones-and now, we're here to walk it with you.
