On June 29, Minister of Unification Chung Dong Young visited flood prevention-related facilities located in the Imjingang River basin in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do.
The site visit was conducted to check the on-site readiness against localized heavy rains in the summer and to strengthen cooperative relations with relevant organizations.
Minister Chung visited the Gunnam Flood Control and Pilseung Bridge, among others, to inspect the flood prevention measures alongside officials from relevant organizations, including the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, K-water, and the 25th Infantry Division.
*Imjingang River: An inter-Korean shared river and an area requiring cooperation and management for advance notification of dam discharges between the South and the North and the exchange of meteorological and hydrological data.
Minister Chung emphasized, "Cooperation on shared rivers between nations is the most universal field of interstate cooperation in the international community, and it is also an area where North Korea cooperates with neighboring countries such as China and Russia."
He also stated, "The South and the North must also transform shared rivers from spaces of hostility and confrontation into cooperative spaces of peace and coexistence where they communicate and build trust with each other," adding, "We will pursue the establishment of a climate crisis and disaster and response system through bilateral cooperation between the two Koreas, as well as multilateral cooperation in connection with international organizations."
Moving forward, the Ministry of Unification will continue to maintain a 24-hour monitoring posture and protect public safety by continuously observing the water levels of Pilseung Bridge, among other measures, under close cooperation with relevant organizations.
