LOS ANGELES, CA - July 9, 2025 - The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce expresses deep concern over the expanding use of tariffs as a trade policy tool. The newly announced 50 percent tariff on copper imports, along with proposed 200 percent duties on pharmaceuticals and potential actions on semiconductors, signals a troubling shift at a time when businesses are still grappling with inflation, supply chain disruptions, and global uncertainty.
"Tariffs act as hidden taxes on American families and businesses," said Maria S. Salinas, President and CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. "We continue to urge policymakers to consider alternatives that safeguard competitiveness, strengthen supply chains, and support long-term economic stability."
The Chamber warns that these escalating costs could strain the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors, delay critical projects, and risk broader economic setbacks, particularly in trade-dependent regions like Los Angeles. As the region prepares to host global events and rebuild from recent wildfires, a stable and balanced trade policy remains essential.
