LĪHUʻE, Hawaiʻi - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying Kaua'i residents of the extended closure of the Port Allen Airport public parking lot near Salt Pond Beach through Friday, Oct. 16, to support continued Hurricane Lowell recovery work.
The salt makers, Hui Hana Paʻakai o Hanapēpē, hosted a community workday on Saturday, Oct. 10 to assist in redistributing sand to the dunes. Approximately 1,400 volunteers of all ages came to help rebuild the dunes.
To accommodate remaining work by Kaua'i County and Hui Hana Paʻakai o Hanapēpē at Salt Pond Beach, the Port Allen parking lot closure will be extended through Friday, Oct. 16. This will allow crews to safely operate heavy machinery to move sand back toward Salt Pond for the restructuring of the sand dunes that protect the salt ponds. Sky Dive Kaua'i will remain operational during this work.
Kaua'i County crews have also placed barriers on Lokokai Road near Kālani Road, to limit beach park access during recovery work on the county portion of Salt Pond Beach, adjacent to the parking lot. Sand berm and slope reconstruction continues during daytime hours between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday, Oct. 12 through Friday, Oct. 16.
The Port Allen Airport public parking lot will be reopened on Saturday, Oct. 17, when this work concludes.
