CHICAGO - FEMA has awarded $15.8 million to reimburse Michigan state and local governments and an electrical cooperative for costs to respond to and recover from the March 2025 severe winter storm. The funding reimburses costs to restore critical public safety communications infrastructure and debris removal services that made roads safe to travel and assisted power restoration efforts.

These awards are distributed through FEMA's Public Assistance program, which provides funding to local government jurisdictions and eligible private non-profits for the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged infrastructure as well as costs incurred for debris removal, disaster cleanup and emergency actions taken.

This latest round of FEMA Public Assistance grants in Michigan includes:

• $14.7 million to Presque Isle Electric & Gas for power restoration protective measures such as clearing downed trees and removing, refurbishing or disposing damaged transformers.
• $642,000 to Charlevoix County Road Commission for labor and heavy equipment to remove and haul vegetative debris throughout county public roads.
• Just under $383,000 to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget to repair damage to public safety communication towers, satellite dishes, electrical poles and fiber optic cables throughout the state affected by ice accumulation.

FEMA remains committed to helping communities recover from disasters when state and local capabilities are overwhelmed - just more than a year since the winter storms, Michigan was hit by floods, tornadoes and severe weather this April 10-21 resulting in a major disaster declaration in 26 counties for FEMA Public Assistance.

Since the declaration in June, FEMA has been working closely with Michigan state to brief prospective applicants on the available assistance and start Recovery Scoping Meetings to help applicants identify and report their damage for reimbursement. State, local and tribal governments and private nonprofits have until the July 30 deadline to submit their application for Public Assistance online through Grants Portal, grantee.fema.gov.
