Topeka, Kan. - The Washburn University Music & Theatre Department will present "Firebringer" at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15, and at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Neese-Gray Theatre in the Garvey Fine Arts Center on the Washburn campus.
"Firebringer" is a musical by Matt Lang, Nick Lang and Brian Holden, with music and lyrics by Meredith Stepien and Mark Swiderski. Set in a stone age time, leader of the tribe, Jemilla, attempts to keep her people safe from the dangers of the wild and the unknown. When tribe member Zazzalil discovers an invention that could change their lives forever, the two clash over how to use it. In this comic musical, the pair wrestle with questions of leadership and responsibility.
"Firebringer" is a recent musical that explores the consequences of technology throughout history and in our contemporary world through the framing of 'cave times' and the discovery of fire," said Dr. Julie Noonan, director of theatre and associate professor of theatre. "We selected the musical because it features strong women leaders and an ensemble cast. Originally produced by Starkid Productions, it has a strong internet following with the song 'Work to Do.' The show features quirky characters navigating leadership, technological change and the struggle to keep their world intact-something we can all relate to every day."
The production is directed by Noonan, with music direction by Dr. Crystal Buck, choreography by Sally Glassman, orchestra direction by Dr. Anya Pogorelova, set design by Ted Shonka, lighting design by Lauren Jones and costume design by Knox McClendon.
The cast includes Washburn students and alumni: Terry Symonette, Taylor Moore, Caroline Scarbrough, Ruby Johnson, Clayton Smith, Elliot Pruitt, Jaxon Schroeder, Gage Gooding, Madison Sharp, Khalani Britt, Eli Dozier, Mack Grimes, Antonio Cervantes, Bella Coyle, Annie Jabary, Grace Thacker, Icarus Franklin and Connall Stevenson. The show contains adult language.
