Council OKs 2 Key South Waterfront Projects

Knoxville City Council tonight gave its go-ahead to a pair of key South Waterfront projects - an important greenway connection and a parking lot to serve the Sevier Avenue business district.

Riverwalk greenway

• City Council authorized Mayor Indya Kincannon to transfer $2 million to Knoxville's Community Development Corp. for construction of a "missing link" between existing South Waterfront greenways.

• Specifically, the new greenway will bridge the gap between 303 Flats and CityView condominiums.

• The design creatively overcomes major barriers - the elevated Norfolk Southern rail line, plus a significant elevation change between the Henley Bridge and CityView; a switchback along the water's edge lessens the steepness and makes the greenway walkable, bikeable and ADA accessible.

Sevier Avenue parking

• Council authorized Kincannon to amend a paving contract with PRI of East Tennessee by $164,140.

• PRI crews will be upgrading a 79-vehicle parking lot on Island Home Avenue, beneath James White Parkway.

• The parking lot, next to Printshop Beer and Mighty Mud, is just one-third of a mile from the heart of the Sevier Avenue business district; the lot will be well-lit, and there will be a crosswalk to a continuous sidewalk on the north side of Island Home Avenue.

The paving of the parking lot is expected to completed by Nov. 7.
