Senator Markey Releases New Report Detailing Deliberate Demonization of Transgender Community by Trump Administration

"Trans Rights are Human Rights: Fighting Trump's Attacks on Trans Americans" highlights stories from Massachusetts and across the country

Washington (May 21, 2025) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), top Democrat on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Subcommittee on Primary Health and Retirement Security, today released a new report of Donald Trump's discriminatory actions against the transgender community. The report contains more than a dozen stories that describe Trump's attacks on the transgender community, as the administration has sought to limit access to medical care, erase trans identity, and eliminate life-saving discrimination and safety protections. The report also highlights the personal experiences of people harmed by Trump's policies, as well as Senator Markey's actions to support the trans community in their fight for equal rights and justice.

"Since Day One of his administration, Donald Trump has relentlessly demonized transgender people to distract from his disastrous policy agenda. The list of attacks against the trans community is a long and cruel testament to using policy to persecute, rather than protect. I've heard stories from trans people across the country who the Trump administration is working to erase, and whose dignity and civil rights are being blatantly and dangerously denied," said Senator Markey. "But the trans community is strong and resilient. They are fighting back, and I am with them every step of the way. Not Trump, not anyone, can erase trans people. To the trans community: I am with you in this fight, I see you, and I love you."

Selected excerpts from Senator Markey's new report:

Limiting Access to Medical Care

"I am increasingly concerned about my ability to practice openly as a clinician specializing in [gender-affirming care] without threat to my licensure or even my well-being."

- Parent of a Transgender Child and Health Care Provider, Massachusetts

Erasing Identity

"As a nonbinary person my sex on my Massachusetts ID is "X." This does not match my passport which still has an "F" gender marker. I do not like having documents that do not match but I am afraid of having my passport seized, as many trans people have, if I tried to get it changed while it was still allowed. Additionally, I have been hesitant to change my gender marker on my passport because I fear I may someday need to flee the country for my own safety and I don't want to have trouble with TSA over a gender marker if this becomes necessary."

- Member of the Transgender Community, Massachusetts

Eliminating Discrimination and Safety Protections

"The federal policies and agenda that has trickled to states has had an impact on my ability to travel. I have canceled invited lectures at prestigious professional organizations due to limits on bathroom access and concerns for my personal safety."

- Member of the Transgender Community and Health Care Provider, Massachusetts

Fighting Back

"Our community is incredibly resilient and beautiful. We fight for each other. We hold each other up. We have faced oppression for so long and yet we continue to move towards joy and love and life. We teach each other what it means to belong, what it means to celebrate what is true and real. We are powerful. We fiercely love each other in the face of all this hate. We are not going anywhere. We need all the allies we can get to stand with us."

- Member of the Transgender Community and Health Care Provider, Minnesota
