Washington, DC - TODAY, Congressman Gabe Amo (D-RI) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais:
"The right-wing Supreme Court's majority decision in Louisiana v. Callaisdeals a devastating blow to our democracy, diluting the power of communities of color at the ballot box.
This decision is a dangerous step backward from the great victories of the Civil Rights movement, and prioritizes hyperpartisan politics over rights and representation.
This ruling means that unless states get caught in blatant discrimination when drawing Congressional and state legislative maps, they can oppress minorities, consolidate power, and strip communities of their voice. It is a threat to our multiracial democracy - for all Americans.
This majority opinion further facilitates Trump and Republicans' attempts to sway elections they cannot win in good faith, denies fair representation, and makes clear that we cannot rely on the courts alone to safeguard the right to vote.
We must legislate, litigate, and organize in response to the Court's action. That is why I will keep fighting to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and take all available steps in Congress to ensure every American has fair and equal representation under the law as our Constitution demands."
