WHO: As a champion of the safekeeping of San Diego Bay, the Port of San Diego is teaming up with California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC), California State Parks, California Coastal Commission, and Clean Harbors to collect expired marine flares from the public at no charge. Expired marine flares might seem harmless once they're out of date, but improper disposal can pose a real threat to our environment, including San Diego Bay.
WHY: Single-use marine flares pose several hazards including fire and explosion risk for boaters. They often contain toxic chemicals like perchlorates, which can leach into the soil and waterways when they're thrown in the trash or left to deteriorate. That pollution can harm marine life and even affect our drinking water.
WHAT: To participate, turn in your expired marine flares at our collection event on November 15. Participants are eligible to receive one free reusable electronic signal device (while supplies last). One new electronic signal device will be handed out per vehicle. Commercial flares will not be accepted.
WHERE: Shelter Island Boat Launch, 2210 Shelter Island Drive, San Diego, CA 92106
WHEN: Saturday, November 15, 2025, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
