WASHINGTON, DC - At a Ways and Means Committee hearing with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. today, Congressman Brendan F. Boyle (PA-02) raised concerns about federal cuts to cancer research while highlighting the story of his constituent, Latanya Morrison.
During his questioning, Boyle spoke about Morrison's grandson, Ahmad Butler, who tragically died of a rare form of brain cancer at just six years old. Boyle noted that Morrison marched 179 miles on foot from Philadelphia to Washington in Ahmad's honor and in support of the fight for a cure, and that he met her at the Capitol at the end of that journey.
Boyle asked Secretary Kennedy why, in light of stories like Latanya's, resources to fight childhood cancer are being cut. He also urged Secretary Kennedy to pledge to declare childhood cancer a national emergency. Kennedy appeared open to that idea.
