Georgia Power storm preps: More than 10,000 personnel including Georgia Power, contracting companies and partner utilities in Florida and other states, are engaged and ready to support the company's response effort. The current forecast predicts freezing rain and subfreezing temperatures, which have the potential to cause power outages. Ice adds weight to tree branches, increasing the chances they will snap and fall onto power lines. Small amounts of ice can cause damage, and damage and risk for power outages increase based on the amount of ice accumulation. Wind also increases the possibility for trees and limbs to fall into power lines. In the final hours before the storm enters Georgia, the company will continue to relocate crews near areas where damage is expected to allow for flexibility and a safe, efficient response.
Friday, Jan. 23 - 5:30 p.m.
Dunwoody crews are treating the busiest roads with brine, a special saltwater solution, to keep them open for public safety once the winter storm moves in. Brine helps prevent snow from accumulating. This will continue into the early evening hours. Please keep an eye out for the truck and supporting crews and give them space to work. Dunwoody Police will provide an escort as needed once the sun goes down.

Here's an update from DeKalb Emergency Management: DEMA is committed to the safety of our community as a significant winter storm is expected to impact north Georgia beginning Friday evening. Current forecasts indicate a high-impact ice storm, with the greatest impacts in northeast Georgia and potential ice extending into the Atlanta metro and parts of central Georgia. Freezing rain is expected this weekend, followed by gusty winds and very cold temperatures early next week, increasing the risk of power outages, hazardous travel, and prolonged infrastructure impacts. We are actively coordinating with the National Weather Service and state partners to monitor conditions and prepare for these impacts. All departments should remain alert for updates and take appropriate preparatory actions now.
