City of Greensboro’s Sue Schwartz Elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration

City of Greensboro's Planning Director Sue Schwartz has been elected to the National Academy of Public Administration as a member of its 2025 Class of Academy Fellows, in recognition of her over 40 years of public administration service and expertise.

"To quote a friend, 'It is not about the awards, it is about the work,'" Schwartz said. "I am humbled that my body of work has been recognized alongside people I have admired throughout my career."

As executive director of the Planning Department, Schwartz spearheaded the City's award-winning GSO2040 Comprehensive Plan. She has served as the American Planning Association's president since January, leading the 16-member board, speaking at conferences, and promoting the importance of planning across the U.S. In 2003, Schwartz was inducted into the American Institute of Certified Planners College of Fellows. She earned her Master of Arts in geography from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Bachelor of Science in geography and urban studies from the University of Pittsburgh. Her career reflects a lifelong commitment to data-informed planning, public engagement, and building more livable, inclusive communities.

"Sue Schwartz is a great fit for the National Academy of Public Administration because she is respected by her peers for her integrity," City Manager Nathaniel 'Trey' Davis said. "She has made significant, sustained contributions to public administration and governance, and she has a distinguished career in public service that demonstrates leadership and accountability."

Selection of the Academy's new Fellows follows a rigorous review of the individual's contributions to the field of public administration and policy. Schwartz joins the prestigious cohort of more than 1,000 Academy Fellows, including only three other planners, as well as former cabinet officers, members of Congress, governors, and more.

"I am so pleased to welcome Sue Schwartz to the Academy's 2025 Class of Fellows," said James-Christian Blockwood, president & CEO of the Academy. "It is an incredibly important time to honor excellence in public service. Our Academy Fellows are nationally recognized and respected for their expertise and contributions to their community. Schwartz exemplifies everything we ask public servants to be."

Schwartz will be inducted alongside the new Fellows during the Academy's 2025 National Conference, which will take place November 2-4 in Washington, D.C.
