'Moroccan Caftan: Art, Traditions & Skills' Inscribed on UNESCO's List…

Wednesday 10 December 2025
The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, meeting in New Delhi for its 20th session, adopted on Wednesday the decision to inscribe "Moroccan Caftan: Art, Tradition & Skills" on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This major international recognition reflects the international community's appreciation for the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in favor of preserving cultural heritage, promoting authentic artistic expressions, and safeguarding traditional skills as essential levers for sustainable development and social cohesion.

The inscription thus acknowledges the centuries-old richness of the Moroccan caftan, a living witness to the history of the Kingdom, its pluralistic identity, and its creative genius. Worn and preserved through generations, the caftan is a symbol of elegance, refinement, and the transmission of unique craftsmanship across the regions of Morocco.

This recognition also reflects the active and constructive role of the Kingdom of Morocco within UNESCO, as well as its ongoing commitment to the protection and promotion of intangible cultural heritage, with all its diversity and historical depth.

Through this decision, the Intangible Heritage Committee recognizes Morocco's contribution to the preservation of a living heritage that combines creativity, identity, and intergenerational transmission, and which continues to enrich intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding between peoples.

The Kingdom of Morocco will maintain, within the framework of this recognition, its efforts to safeguard, promote, and transmit skills associated with the Moroccan caftan, and reaffirms its commitment to the universal values of cultural diversity and mutual respect, which are at the heart of UNESCO's mandate.
