Thought Leadership at Abu Dhabi Finance Week

We recently attended Abu Dhabi Finance Week, where SS&C Technologies Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bill Stone, spoke on a panel titled "Inside the Hedge Fund Industry." Key insights from the panel centered on strategies to achieve above-average investment returns, with a focus on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in modern investment decision-making. The session emphasized the growing importance of AI in analyzing data, predicting trends, and enhancing portfolio performance in an increasingly competitive market.

Abu Dhabi is known as the home of a rising Falcon Economy. In 2024, the Emirate achieved a significant milestone, with its non-oil GDP rising above 50% for the first time, showcasing its success in economic diversification. This achievement is bolstered by an unprecedented influx of foreign direct investment and sovereign wealth fund (SWF) activity. Abu Dhabi now tops global charts for assets under management (AUM), highlighting its appeal to international investors and its role as a leader in financial innovation and stability.

Abu Dhabi's Sovereign Wealth Fund Leadership
Abu Dhabi's SWF portfolio underscores its financial strength and global influence. With entities like the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Mubadala Investment Company (MIC), the Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADQ) and the Emirates Investment Authority (EIA), the Emirate remains the world's leading city for SWF capital management.

Investing in the Energy Transition
The energy transition was another highlight of the discussions, reflecting global investment trends in clean energy, which reached $1.8 trillion in 2023. Experts explored emerging opportunities in renewables, hydrogen and energy storage, while addressing market challenges such as project delays and rising interest rates. The session underscored the critical role of innovative investment strategies in navigating these complexities and capitalizing on the transition to a sustainable energy future.

Private Credit: A Thriving Asset Class
Private credit continues to thrive as one of the fastest-growing asset classes, with market size nearly doubling over the last five years to reach $2 trillion. Projected to grow to $2.8 trillion by 2028, private credit offers significant premiums compared to liquid credit alternatives, attracting strong investor appetite. The panel session explored the benefits of this asset class-including elevated base rates-while also addressing the risks and complexities inherent in private credit investments.
