The Tunnels to Towers (T2T) Fort Worth 5K Run & Walk was established in 2019 in memory of Fort Worth Police Officer Garett Hull, who was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 14, 2018. Following his passing, the foundation paid off his family's mortgage, a gesture that inspired the launch of the local Fort Worth event. Today, the Fort Worth Run & Walk is one of over 70 events nationwide that unite communities in honoring our nation's heroes.

The opening ceremonies will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, and the 5K Run & Walk will start at 8:45 a.m. The event will start and finish at the Fort Worth Stockyards, 140 E. Exchange Ave.

The Tunnel to Towers Run & Walk series was created to honor the heroic life and death of Stephen Siller, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on Sept. 11, 2001. After strapping on his gear and running through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, Siller died while working to save the lives of those trapped and injured in the towers.

To honor all of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and support local first responders and military who make extraordinary sacrifices in the line of duty, T2T supports four programs to assist our nation's heroes and their families during times of unimaginable need:

  • Smart Home Program: T2T assists catastrophically injured military servicemembers by building mortgage-free smart homes designed specifically to serve their needs. To date, T2T has assisted 16 Texas military servicemembers.
  • Fallen First Responder Home Program: T2T pays off the mortgage or provides financial assistance to the families of first responders killed in the line of duty. To date, T2T has assisted 31 Texas first responder families.
  • Gold Star Family Home Program: T2T builds mortgage-free homes and provides mortgage payoffs to the families of our nation's servicemembers who are killed in combat. To date, T2T has assisted 22 families of Texas military servicemembers killed in combat.
  • Homeless Veteran Program: The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is committed to ending veteran homelessness nationwide. The program honors the sacrifice and dignity of the American servicemember by ensuring that no veteran is left out on the streets of the country they volunteered to defend. Since its inception, Tunnels to Towers has provided housing assistance and access to supportive services to over 10,000 veterans.
