Eastern New Mexico University-Portales Announces Record-Breaking Fall 2026 Census Enrollment, Surpassing 2017 Milestone

September 8, 2026 - PORTALES, NM - Building upon a strong trajectory of academic momentum, Eastern New Mexico University announced its official fall 2026 enrollment data today, highlighting a record-breaking student headcount with broad gains across undergraduate transfers and graduate cohorts.

ENMU's total student headcount reached 6,132 for the fall semester, marking a 2.2 percent increase compared to 6,002 students at the same point last year. This headcount breaks the fall 2017 enrollment milestone of 6,027.

"Our continued growth speaks volumes about the learning environment created by our faculty and staff," said Dr. James Johnston, ENMU chancellor. "When students find a welcoming community and clear pathways to their career goals, the word spreads. We are proud to see more students choosing ENMU to build their future."

Key highlights from the fall 2026 enrollment data include:

• Total graduate student enrollment grew by 6.6 percent to 1,721 students, a new graduate enrollment record.
• Incoming transfer student numbers rose 12 percent to 661 students.
• Continuing student numbers experienced healthy gains, increasing by 2.9 percent to 3,598 students.

University leadership attributes these sustained gains to campus-wide collaboration centered on student success, a dedication to ongoing support for both incoming freshmen and those seeking career progression, flexible program delivery, and accessible higher education.

This semester marks continued upward progress for the main campus as the University builds on its mission of student support and retention.
