ATLANTA, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT), in partnership with SR 400 Peach Partners, LLC, will begin major construction activities in April 2026 for the State Route (SR) 400 Express Lanes Project. This milestone for the largest transportation infrastructure project in state history marks a progressive step forward for long-term mobility improvements in Fulton and Forsyth counties.
Motorists can expect to see construction equipment mobilizing, work zones being established, and phased traffic shifts as crews begin foundational work to support the future express lanes, including construction of new bridges and upgrades to existing interchanges. All planned construction activities for the SR 400 Express Lanes are anticipated to be complete by 2031.
Construction will occur both during the day and overnight, with overnight work, typically 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., used to minimize daytime traffic disruptions. Specific work schedules may vary by location and activity. The construction schedule is subject to change.
Project resources are available on the project website, and motorists are encouraged to subscribe to receive weekly traffic impact alerts and monthly project progress updates.
Project Overview:
The SR 400 Express Lanes Project will add new, optional tolled express lanes from the North Springs MARTA Station to just north of McFarland Parkway to help manage congestion, improve travel reliability, and support growth. Construction includes two express lanes in each direction between the North Springs MARTA Station and McGinnis Ferry Road, and one express lane in each direction from McGinnis Ferry Road to just north of McFarland Parkway.
The express lanes are designed to keep traffic moving up to 30% faster than the general-purpose lanes while those existing lanes should see benefits as well. Managed lanes use "dynamic pricing," meaning toll rates adjust based on real-time traffic conditions. Advanced signage will display current toll rates prior to every express-lane entrance, allowing drivers the option to enter based on price and always offering drivers a reliable travel option while keeping existing general-purpose lanes free to use.
The project also includes Express Lanes Transit (ELT), providing dedicated stations for MARTA's future Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on SR 400. BRT service for SR 400 will begin at the North Springs MARTA Station, with direct access to BRT stations at Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall, and Windward Park and Ride.
The SR 400 Express Lanes will be part of the larger Georgia Express Lanes Network, connecting more communities across the region and helping motorists and transit riders enjoy more reliable and predictable trip times.
SR 400 is a major north/south highway in the metro Atlanta area serving fast-growing communities north of the city. Historically, the counties that the project travels through have housed over 20% of the region's population according to the Atlanta Regional Commission model, and their share of the region's population is expected to grow by 2050.
The project is being delivered by the state's developer partner, SR 400 Peach Partners, LLC as a Public-Private Partnership, or P3, who is responsible for design, construction, and all operations, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the project for an approximately 56-year period. Benefits of the P3 model include minimal public funding required to build the project as well as faster delivery and completion.
