The University of Toledo Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership is launching a Spring Colloquia Series, inviting students to discuss ideas, build community and cultivate the habits of thoughtful civic leadership.
Institute faculty lead each seminar-style colloquium from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays:
• 17: "Helping Hand or 'Despot's Heel'? Abraham Lincoln's Use of Executive Power," presented by Dr. Deborah O'Malley;
• 24: "Understanding Christian Politics: A Conversation About Basic Principles," presented by Dr. Jonathan Ashbach;
• March 17: "George Orwell's Animal Farm," presented by Dr. Jonathan Culp;
• March 24: "Do I Own Myself? A Debate," presented by Ashbach;
• March 31: "Is Political History a Story of Progress?" presented by Dr. Oliver Traldi;
• April 7: "Has American Politics Become 'Tribal'?" presented by Traldi; and
• April 21: "On Tyranny," presented by Dr. Michael Gonzalez.
Dinner is provided during colloquia, and students are asked to register online in advance.
The Institute of American Constitutional Thought and Leadership is a multidisciplinary center established at UToledo by the Ohio Legislature in 2023.
It offers a variety of courses on topics like statesmanship, civic discourse and the liberal and conservative traditions in the United States, in addition to facilitating lectures, debates and other public programming, including professional development opportunities for civics teachers across the state through the recently launched Fundamental Principles Institute.
