Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival Celebrate Two American Musical Icons

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival invite the public to a dynamic, free outdoor concert on Friday, August 7, at 7:00 p.m., celebrating two iconic forces in American music. Blending the swing innovations of Don Redman with the timeless brilliance of George Gershwin, festival musicians and the Howard Burns Quartet will bring an energetic fusion of jazz and classical traditions to the historic Storer College lawn as part of the nation's 250th anniversary festivities.

The program will feature "I Got Rhythm" and other George Gershwin classics, arranged in Don Redman's style. Redman's pioneering swing arrangements and Gershwin's masterful fusion of classical and jazz traditions together reflect two essential forces in American music history.

Known as "The Little Giant of Jazz", Don Redman studied and played music at Storer College from 1916 to 1920. He went on to compose and arrange music for radio, television and many big bands, including his own. He is considered the first great jazz arranger and a leading figure in the development of the swing and big band style, transforming the sound American big band music.

Founded in 1867 as West Virginia's first college open to African Americans, Storer grew from a single classroom into a vibrant campus community. Today, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves these historic grounds to honor Storer students, faculty, and staff, and for the enjoyment of visitors and residents.
