Greensboro Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years

The Greensboro Fire Department proudly announces its Centennial Anniversary, marking 100 years of professional service to the City of Greensboro. While fire protection in Greensboro dates back to the early 1800s through the dedication of volunteer firefighters, the department officially became a fully paid organization in 1926.

For the past century, the Greensboro Fire Department has served the community with professionalism, courage, and integrity. Today, the department consists of 613 members operating from 27 fire stations across the city, responding to more than 40,000 calls annually. These responses include firefighting, emergency medical care, hazardous materials response, urban search and rescue, and numerous community risk reduction, education, and prevention programs.

"The Greensboro Fire Department's centennial represents more than just a milestone in years-it represents a legacy of service, sacrifice, and commitment to the safety of our community," said Fire Chief Jim Robinson. "This anniversary is an opportunity to honor those who built this department, recognize the dedicated professionals serving today, and inspire the next generation of firefighters."

Throughout 2026, the department will host several commemorative events to celebrate its history and engage both current and former members, as well as the community.
