Meet the Settle Outdoor Series by Anderssen & Voll for Muuto

Scandinavian design brand Muuto and its long-term collaborators, Norwegian design duo Anderssen & Voll, venture into the great outdoors with Settle-soft and refined upholstered lounge seating blurring the boundaries between inside and outside, a perfect companion for never-ending summer days.

"Today, many of us live in a way that blurs the lines between interior and exterior. These spaces support each other. You can see that in design too, as the distinction between indoor and outdoor furniture becomes less clear. We bring the comfort of indoors out with us. So, we designed a sofa and lounge chair for spending the best of times outdoors," says Espen Voll.

Torbjørn Anderssen, the other half of Anderssen & Voll, adds that upholstered outdoor furniture has a long history in Southern Europe and South America, but that it was also a great feature of Danish mid-century modern. The Settle Outdoor Series was inspired by the Scandinavian masters behind some of these designs aiming to bring in a new perspective.

Having created several best-selling pieces in Muuto's seating collection, among others Connect, Oslo and Outline, they took on the challenge of designing an upholstered seating series for the outdoors. The result is paradoxical in a delightful way-comfy and friendly, but light.

"The tubulars steel and supporting textile bands are a nod to classic traits of outdoor furniture, while the upholstery and tailored details lean on the feel of indoor sofas and lounge chairs. This meeting of opposites gives it a light, contemporary and distinctly Scandinavian feel, says Anderssen.

"We experimented a lot with the metal tubes and how they intersect to make up the constructive base for the products. The tubes make an interesting path for the eye to follow, discovering how the metal structure nests and holds the inner upholstery. We really appreciate the transparency of the construction," says Voll.

Alongside a soft, familiar form and materiality, the subtle magic of Settle lies in the ingenious details. The wooden armrests are generous, a gentle introduction to the warm wooden material-a space to rest the arm or a drink on.
