More than 235,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year according to the American Cancer Society. Lung cancer kills more people than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.
The impact is felt locally. Kentucky leads the nation in both lung cancer incidence and mortality. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Ohio as well. By the time you have symptoms, it may already have spread and become more difficult to treat.
Julian Guitron, MD, a thoracic surgeon with The Christ Hospital Health Network, says the earlier lung cancer is detected, the better the long-term outcome.
"When detected early, lung cancer can be removed surgically, often without the need of chemotherapy or radiation. The best preventative measure to help lower your risk of lung cancer is to quit smoking if you haven't already."
Patients who are 50 years and older with a history of smoking may qualify for a lung cancer screening using a low-dose CT scan. "This is one of the least invasive screening tests available to patients who are at high-risk for this type of cancer," Dr. Guitron says. "It has proven to be extremely successful nationwide, and we strongly encourage our community to consider joining our program now"
In celebration of all lung cancer survivors and to raise awareness of screening and treatment options, The Christ Hospital Health Network shares these resources to educate and inspire you on your care journey.
