GONZALES -This month, Speaker Robert Rivas welcomed the California Coastal Commission to the Salinas Valley city of Gonzales for a public hearing that empowered access to decision-making for Central Coast communities.
The public hearing was particularly significant, as 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the passage of the California Coastal Act, which established the permanent California Coastal Commission.
The Coastal Commission's visit to the Salinas Valley brought crucial conversations about the future of California's coastline closer to inland residents whose lives are shaped by these choices. By hosting the meeting in Gonzales, the Commission provided a meaningful opportunity for more Californians to engage directly in the process.
"The coast belongs to all Californians, and Coastal Commission decisions cast ripple effects far beyond the shoreline. This month's public hearing in Gonzales is a powerful reminder that protecting our coast requires a strong voice from every community," Speaker Robert Rivas said.
"On behalf of the City of Gonzales, I'm proud to welcome the California Coastal Commission to our community as it marks its 50th anniversary. Hosting this meeting here is a meaningful opportunity to be part of important conversations about the future of our coast. We're grateful to showcase our city and ensure that voices from across our region are heard," said Jose Rios, Mayor of the City of Gonzales.
The Commission held the public hearing at the newly opened Dennis & Janice Caprara Community Center, which was made possible by the efforts of the City Council, Youth Council and local leaders.
During the Commission's meeting, community members had the chance to participate in discussions, demonstrating its commitment to making sure all voices are heard and that decisions are fair and equitable.
