Dr. Anthony D’Abarno Brings Advanced, Personalized Knee Replacement Surgery to SGMC Health

Anthony D'Abarno, DO, Orthopedic Surgeon, and the surgical team showcase the next-generation knee implant offered at SGMC Health

SGMC Health, under the leadership of orthopedic surgeon Anthony D'Abarno, DO, is now offering an advanced knee replacement option designed to better match how a patient's knee naturally moves. The approach combines a next-generation knee implant with augmented reality technology to create a more personalized surgical experience for appropriate patients.

The GMK SpheriKA® knee implant is designed to restore the knee's natural motion rather than forcing it into a one-size-fits-all position. Unlike traditional knee replacements, this implant is built to support kinematic alignment, meaning the joint is aligned based on the patient's own anatomy.

A key feature of the implant is its medial ball-and-socket design, which provides stability where the knee needs it most while still allowing natural movement on the outside of the joint. This balance is intended to help the knee feel more stable and more natural during everyday activities like walking, standing, and climbing stairs.

To further personalize the procedure, Dr. D'Abarno uses Medacta's NextAR™ Augmented Reality Surgical Platform during surgery. This technology allows him to see real-time, patient-specific information while placing the implant, helping ensure it is positioned based on the individual's anatomy rather than estimates or averages.

"Every knee is different," said Dr. D'Abarno. "This technology allows us to customize the surgery to the patient. The goal is a knee that feels more natural, more stable, and better suited to how that person moves in daily life."

Studies of medial-stabilized knee designs like the GMK SpheriKA suggest many patients experience higher satisfaction and report that their knee feels more "normal" after recovery. The design is also intended to reduce unwanted sensations such as clicking or shifting, that some patients notice with other implants.

The system offers both traditional cemented fixation and a cementless option, allowing Dr. D'Abarno to choose the best approach based on the patient's bone quality and overall health.

This advanced knee replacement option is not right for everyone. Dr. D'Abarno carefully evaluates each patient to determine whether this personalized approach is appropriate based on anatomy, activity level, and long-term goals. Patients interested in learning more about personalized knee replacement options can speak with their physician or request a consultation with Dr. D'Abarno.
