PITTSBURGH - Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today announced a monumental achievement - surpassing 100,000 births since the network's formation in 2013. This milestone is a testament to the growth of, and investment in, maternal care services across the network's five labor and delivery units throughout Western Pennsylvania.
To honor this occasion, network leadership hosted special celebrations recognizing the extraordinary dedication of the labor & delivery (L&D) caregivers throughout the AHN Women's Institute, while more than a dozen adorable newborns across the region proudly sported custom onesies proclaiming "100,000 & Me!"
"Last year, Allegheny Health Network's maternity units celebrated a record-breaking number of deliveries, a clear affirmation of our commitment to providing exceptional, accessible prenatal and postpartum care to our obstetric patients, from conception through the fourth trimester," said Marcia Klein-Patel, MD, PhD, Chair of AHN Women's Institute. "Although we continue to grow, our dedication to deeply personalized, high-quality care remains unchanged."
In 2013, when AHN was formally created by Highmark Health, the network's labor and delivery programs recorded 4,749 arrivals. Since then, delivery volumes have grown consistently, with a notable peak of 8,623 babies in 2022, and the most recent record of 8,756 births in 2025.
By the end of 2025, AHN had delivered nearly 98,000 babies since its formation.
Over the last dozen years, AHN has made significant investments in its obstetrics services, opening two new L&D units at AHN Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills (2014) and AHN Wexford Hospital in Pine Twp. (2021), and expanding services at AHN Saint Vincent ($9.5 million investment in 2017), AHN Forbes (2016) and AHN West Penn (a new, $23 million neonatal care intensive care unit in 2019).
The network also gained national recognition for the launch of the Alex Joy D'Achille Center in 2018, a $2.5 million, one-of-a-kind behavioral health program dedicated to perinatal mood disorders, providing intensive outpatient care, medication management and one-on-one therapy, among other services.
And AHN continues to grow its OBGYN and midwifery practices, just recently opening a new AHN midwives location east of Pittsburgh with delivering privileges at AHN Forbes Hospital.
"When AHN opened the labor and delivery program at AHN Jefferson Hospital, it was the first program to launch in the state in more than three decades, while AHN Wexford's maternity unit has served thousands of families in Pittsburgh's North Hills since it opened just five years ago," said Mark Sevco, president of AHN. "These openings - as well as the numerous other capital investments and independent OB/GYN affiliations made by AHN - demonstrate the network's steadfast commitment to enhancing maternal and pediatric health in our region, and beyond."
Today's announcement is complemented by consistent recognition received by the network's flagship maternity hospital, AHN West Penn, which has been distinguished as a Top 50 hospital nationwide for OB/GYN care by U.S. News & World Report, four years straight.
Such accolades not only highlight West Penn's excellence but also reflect the quality of care and facilities across the entire AHN Women's Institute, Dr. Klein-Patel said.
Spacious, private labor and delivery suites outfit all labor & delivery units across the network, and women receive personalized care during delivery from a full spectrum of providers, including board-certified obstetricians, OB-trained anesthesiologists, certified nurse midwives, L&D nurses and advanced practice providers, lactation consultants and pediatricians.
For little ones requiring specialized attention, AHN provides exceptional care through its advanced neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), which are staffed 24/7 by highly skilled neonatologists.
Following discharge, AHN obstetricians then provide warm handoffs with leading pediatricians across the AHN Pediatric Institute for baby's first post-hospital wellness visit.
