October 23 is Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) Day - a day dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits and application of HPWH technologies in residential and commercial buildings. This annual event is hosted by the Advanced Water Heating Initiative (AWHI), a leading advocate for the adoption of HPWHs. Copeland joins AWHI in celebrating HPWH Day and its goal of making HPWHs a universally accepted equipment choice in single-family and multifamily homes, as well as commercial facilities.
Advancing the next generation of energy-efficient water heating technologies has been a key focus area for Copeland's product development efforts. We're proud to lead the charge in the electrification of water heating with innovative compression, drives and controls solutions that make HPWHs a viable, sustainable alternative to traditional fossil-fuel systems.
Recognizing the opportunity to decarbonize domestic hot water
HPWH Day recognizes and connects advocates, manufacturers, installers and building owners worldwide to showcase the transformative decarbonization potential of HPWH technology. This annual event highlights how advanced water heating solutions address critical environmental challenges while delivering superior performance and energy savings.
The statistics alone speak volumes:
Electrifying water heating with HPWHs used for domestic hot water- as well as hydronic heat pumps that provide comfort heating and cooling - offers a significant decarbonization opportunity across the entire building sector.
Leading the charge in water heating innovation
As a global leader in sustainable heating and cooling solutions, Copeland is at the forefront of the energy transition driving heat pump water heater adoption. Our comprehensive portfolio of integrated compression, variable-frequency drives, controls and component technologies enables original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to develop systems that meet the demanding requirements of both residential and commercial applications.
Our water heating innovations include:
Enhanced vapor injection (EVI) technology: Our fixed- and variable-speed scroll compressors utilize advanced EVI technology to achieve sufficient leaving water temperatures even in challenging low-ambient conditions, enabling systems to deliver 120°F to 200°F water temperatures.
Optimized operating envelopes: Specifically engineered for electric water heating applications, our platforms provide the heating capacity needed while maximizing system efficiency and ensuring year-round performance.
Refrigerant flexibility: Supporting a variety of lower-GWP refrigerant options - including A1, A2L, and CO₂ refrigerants - our solutions help manufacturers comply with evolving refrigerant mandates while maintaining optimal performance.
Supporting the next generation of water heating
The transition from gas-fired systems to electric HPWHs and hydronic heat pumps presents both opportunities and challenges. Traditional barriers include concerns about upfront costs, operational differences and performance concerns in cold climates. However, the decarbonization benefits and the long-term potential for cost savings are driving the popularity of HPWS.
Copeland is partnering with leading manufacturers to address application challenges and help commercialize the next generation of HPWH and hydronic heat pump systems. Our breadth of fixed, modulated and variable-speed compression technologies, integrated controls and packaged-system approach maximizes system performance and design simplicity. The legendary reliability of our compression platforms offers OEMs and system designers the confidence to replace or retrofit legacy boilers and water heating systems with energy-efficient heat pumps.
Backed by Copeland's rigorous testing capabilities, research labs, partnerships and field trials, our water heating solutions are designed to meet and exceed expectations for performance, reliability and efficiency. We're committed to delivering maximum quality and value to help stakeholders throughout the heat pump equipment supply chain make a successful transition to lower-carbon technologies.
Our variable-speed platforms with EVI technology enable systems to maintain high efficiency across varying load conditions, while our transcritical CO₂ compressors can achieve water temperatures exceeding 200°F, which is essential for commercial applications with high-temperature requirements.
