Josephine County Board of Commissioners Weekly Update

Josephine County, ORE - The Josephine County Board of Commissioners held multiple meetings this week addressing public safety, economic development, elections, property assessment, and community engagement. The Board remains focused on strengthening public safety preparedness, supporting responsible economic development, and ensuring effective delivery of County services.
During the April 21st Administration Workshop, the Board reviewed and approved participation in the County Assessment Function Funding Assistance (CAFFA) Grant, supporting the Assessor's Office with state-distributed funding. The Board also approved election-related expenditures and temporary staffing to support upcoming election operations. In addition, the Board approved the establishment of the Josephine County Economic Development Grant Advisory Committee to enhance oversight and evaluation of grant funding decisions.
On April 22nd, the Board held a General Discussion focused on wildfire preparedness and response coordination. Presentations were provided by local, state, and federal partners, including fire districts, the Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management, and utility providers. Discussions emphasized interagency coordination, fuel reduction efforts, emergency alert systems, and strategies to improve response capabilities ahead of fire season.
On April 22nd, at the Weekly Business Session, the Board conducted a public hearing and approval regarding annexations into the Josephine Community Library District. The Board also received public comment on topics including solid waste, public safety, and community concerns, and approved its consent calendar.
At the April 23rd, Administration Workshop, the Board addressed personnel and administrative matters, including discussion and approval to move forward with filling the Web and Information Coordinator position to improve public communication and responsive records. The Board also reviewed and made appointments to the Josephine County Budget Committee, emphasizing the importance of balanced representation and compliance with statutory term requirements.
During the April 23rd, Legal Counsel Update, the Board reviewed policy considerations related to news media participation in executive sessions and discussed legal and financial matters, including participation in the National Opioid Settlement. The Board also met in executive session to receive updates on litigation and property-related matters. Following executive session, the Board directed staff to proceed with settlement-related actions, continue evaluation of certain County properties, and take additional administrative steps as needed.
Josephine County has submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Transportation identifying critical safety, infrastructure, and resiliency needs along U.S. Highway 199 and Oregon Highway 238. The County highlights ongoing risks such as narrow roadways, high crash rates, and limited emergency access, and emphasizes the need for targeted federal investment to improve safety, reliability, and regional connectivity.Additionally, the Board announced it is currently accepting applications for the Josephine County 4-H/OSU Service District and Law Enforcement Services District Budget Committees. The initial terms will be staggard in 1-year, 2- year, and 3 -year terms. Community members are encouraged to apply and participate in local governance.
