Congressman Thompson Statement Regarding the Trump’s Justice Department Effort to Vacate January 6 Seditious Conspiracy Convictions

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement regarding the Justice Department's Effort to Vacate January 6 Seditious Conspiracy Convictions:

"It is completely heinous for the Trump administration to attempt to erase seditious conspiracy convictions from those who attacked our democracy and the United States Capitol on January 6. Not only does it attempt to rewrite history, it completely subverts the rule of law.

"The unpatriotic leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers were convicted by their peers and fairly so. They should have served their entire sentences. Reversing these convictions would erode public trust in the justice system and would signal that politically motivated violence in service to Trump carries zero consequence. While Trump's presidency is already an abject failure, he must not be allowed to do even more damage to the rule of law."
